USA SOFTBALL: No-hitter by Osterman leads team to 13-0 win over Visalia All-Stars
May 16, 2008
VISALIA, Calif.-In front of 4,874 fans who came out in 90 degree weather, the USA Softball Women's National team combined for 15 hits with no strikeouts to beat the Visalia All-Stars, 13-0, in six innings as part of the KFC Bound 4 Beijing Tour. Local favorites Andrea Duran (Selma, Calif.) and Stacey Nuveman (La Verne, Calif.) both hit triples while Duran put up four RBI and Nuveman two. Through two innings the team was selective in their pitches with the team drawing four walks. However defensive plays by the Visalia All-Stars caught speedy Caitlin Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) and Andrea Duran (Selma, Calif.) stealing to keep anyone from crossing home through two innings. After only logging only two hits through two innings, the third saw the team hit for the cycle with seven players earning hits for a 7-0 lead. Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif.) and Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) started the inning off with back-to-back hits. Crystl Bustos (Canyon Country, Calif.) reached on an error to plate Watley from second. Visalia resident Stacey Nuveman (La Verne, Calif.) gave the hometown something to be proud of with a triple to right center to give the team a 3-0 lead. Duran, who lives just outside Visalia, followed with a two-run shot to right field that cleared the outside bleachers brought in for the capacity crowd. Another triple by Watley plated two runs for the team for a seven-run third inning. The team tacked on a run in the fourth off a leadoff solo homerun by Crystl Bustos (Canyon Country, Calif.) before the team exploded in the fifth with five runs scored to take home a 13-0 victory. A double by pinch hitter Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, Calif.) plated two runs and a single by Bustos that shot off the pitchers glove put up one more run. Duran closed out the scoring barrage with a triple to plate two runs and give the team a 13-0 win. Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) earned her seventh start of the Tour and went the distance with 14 strikeouts for her seventh win of the KFC Bound 4 Beijing Tour. Osterman held the team to no hits for her first complete game no-hitter. "It was nice to be able to throw consistent today. I felt extremely in control out there and it was fun and exciting to see our team put up some big hits today," said Osterman. "The crowd was great. It was probably one of the most energetic crowds we have had so that made it a lot of fun." The Red, White and Blue continue through Northern California on Sun.
